Once swimmers have mastered the initial stages of swimming, and feel confident in the water, they are encouraged to develop their technique. This will continue throughout their time at the swim school. At Sureway the learning and development of strokes and stamina building is ongoing; right through to adolescence when swimmers can join the 45min training session on Friday evening.

Throughout the year, various activities and practices take place: in week three of each term there is an emergency whistle test. This is carried out in all lessons and is an important part of the pools’ EAPs (Emergency Action Plans) and an integral part of our Health and Safety, and Child Protection Polices. There is a long blast on the whistle given by the lifeguard and all swimmers are expected to swim to the side of the pool and climb out.

Week four of each term will be length swimming for all classes. This is to assess the ability to swim distance with and without aids, as appropriate. In the summer term we have a ‘Shorts and T-shirt week’. This is an opportunity for all swimmers to experience swimming in clothing and develop some understanding of personal survival.
